Then after a delicious full breakfast, you’ll be rested and ready to spend the day exploring all of the great attractions and activities in this exciting area of Colorado.
One of those groups is Outlaw Tours (877-259-1800). They take guests to Silverton in mini-vans, then take you into the “high country” in four-wheel vehicles for a two-hour tour. You then have time to stroll around Silverton. Your return trip to Durango is on the train. Many of our guests have enjoyed this tour immensely! Mesa Verde National Park is only a little over one hour away from the Apple Orchard Inn. You will be able to tour the awe-inspiring cliff dwellings as well as a most interesting museum. There are also trails for hiking.
If you want to keep your feet on the ground, more or less, you can go horseback riding. One of our favorite guides is just up the road from us, Rapp Guides & Packers (970-247-8923). Their rides are in the Haviland Lake area, and they have rides from one hour to full day. They have beautiful horses and they try hard to match rider’s abilities to the right horse. Fly fishing in the Four Corners area is some of the best around. John and Celeste recommend hiring a guide for at least the first day on the rivers to get you used to the area, where good “fishing holes” are and to help you figure out just what the heck those fish are going for! There are numerous guide services in Durango, but the one we recommend is Duranglers (970-385-4081). They have a shop on the San Juan River, below the Navajo Dam, the Disneyland of the fly fishing world. Their guides virtually live on the San Juan and know just about all there is about that river. Their shop in Durango is particularly nice as well. You can go into the Durango shop on Main, between 9th and 10th Avenue, and find out how the rivers and streams are running, what sort of flies are recommended, and they have wonderful equipment and supplies as well. Their guides meet you at the shop downtown and then take you to your destination for fishing. Then, of course, there are the art galleries and the wonderful shops on Main Street in Durango. Not to be missed is the Toh-Atin Gallery on 9th Street. Even if you aren’t “into” southwestern art, you will be impressed with the quality of art in this gallery. Durango has many art galleries. The majority of them are in the Downtown Durango area. A word to the wise, leave your diets behind you! Durango has some great restaurants. The inn has a basket with all the menus of the restaurants, and John and Celeste can sit down with you and direct you to a restaurant that you would enjoy. Did we mention mountain bike riding, the alpine slide at Durango Mountain Resort, hiking to be done in the area around us, and soaking at the Trimble Hot Springs (just 1-1/2 miles south of the inn)? So, needless to say, there is plenty to do in Durango and the surrounding area. It’s just a matter of fitting it all in! Colorado travel - Getting ready to make that driving trip around Colorado, including Durango of course, a couple of great sources of information for activities, festivals, markets, arts and crafts, rodeos, etc., around the state of Colorado and specifically in the Southwest are the websites of the Rocky Mountain Explorer and Southwest Explorer.
